I so wish this story were not true, but it is. It was a Wednesday morning around 7:30 AM late 2001, I was on my way to the office. A beautiful morning, hot, but it was still early and the morning air felt nice. I was traveling down a main four lane road that leads directly into Nashville. I was driving on the inside lane, next to the turning lane. Just to my right a Metro bus had stopped in the middle of the road, not at a bus stop, just in the middle of the road. I noticed to my far left a man running across two lanes of oncoming traffic and paused in the turning lane. He was waiting on my lane of traffic to clear so that he might proceed to catch the waiting bus. I slowed momentarily to make certain he was waiting to cross, and then proceeded. This all took place in a couple seconds. I'm sure you understand, when driving we make a lot of calculations in our minds every few seconds. Just as I started to pass him, he took off running to catch the bus, and at that very instant both our lives would forever change.

I have the distinct privilege of coaching Jamie Slingerland the Founder and President of J & R Photo. Jamie is an incredible businessman as well as an awesome dad, husband and faithful friend to many.
The conventional methods of a client/coach interaction are totally obsolete when it comes to coaching Jamie. We tried numerous times to talk over the phone, meet at Pinewood Social, a trendy local restaurant and even video conference. Nothing seemed to hold Jamie’s attention like the great outdoors. These past 6 months have been an absolute blast. I will have to admit, it's been very productive. Recently, we've held our coaching sessions on Old Hickory Lake, Golf Club of Tennessee, Centennial Park, next door to the Parthenon, and various other outdoor venues. I’ll just have to be totally honest here; I love getting paid to visit each and every one of these places. But let me also speak up and say that these activities engage Jamie in a way that the traditional methods failed.

This morning early, just after Starbucks opened, I was standing in line waiting to order my plain black, tall coffee. There was a lady two people ahead of me in line that was getting on my last nerve. She was asking a million and one questions. I was in a little bit of a hurry, and I didn’t want to spend the whole day in line. She was asking, “what is the difference between this and that”. I’m like, seriously? It’s a cup of coffee; you’re not going to be making mortgage payments here. I’m not sure about my mood, except I’m an off the chart “D” personality on the DISC profile. Well, I needed to get a grip on my attitude.
Thank goodness, now the line is moving… When the next guy made his order, food and all, I thought, can you not eat breakfast at home?! It sounds like I need a venti double espresso fast, or maybe not.
Before I kill somebody,
I need to do something nice,
and I need to do it fast.
